Mastering the Match: Des Moines Garage Remodel Elevates Home’s Curb Appeal
When it comes to home design, every single detail counts. While your house is always the star of the show, a thoughtfully designed garage has the power to elevate your entire property’s curb appeal.
Take this beautiful Des Moines home and its garage that was designed to create a cohesive, polished look. What stands out is how seamlessly the new detached garage complements the original 1929 home. It looks as if it was always meant to be there.

The Before: Small, Cramped, and Outgrown
We previously had the pleasure of working with these Des Moines homeowners on a lower-level basement remodel, so we were thrilled when they invited us back to tackle their garage. While the original structure had a certain historic charm, it simply wasn't matching the family's lifestyle anymore:
- Tight Quarters: The layout was far too cramped for two modern vehicles plus all the standard gear that comes with homeownership.
- Storage vs. Parking: Over time, the garage became a dedicated storage unit, leaving the family’s cars sitting out in the Iowa elements.
- Structural Wear: On top of being completely uninsulated, the concrete floor was badly in need of repair.

The After: Where Historic Curb Appeal Meets Modern Functionality
Achieving visual harmony with a 1929 brick home was a beautiful design challenge, but curb appeal was only half the battle. This new garage needed to work hard for the family.
Beyond comfortably housing two vehicles, the new interior was strategically designed to organize tools, lawn and garden equipment and bikes and toys for the youngest family member. By intentionally planning for vertical wall storage systems, we ensured that valuable floor space stays completely clear and usable.

The Secret Weapon: A Massive Second-Story Attic
The main level is a homeowner's dream—organized, efficient and tidy. But a hidden surprise lies just up the stairs.
To keep the main floor entirely free of clutter, we built a massive, high-ceilinged second-story storage space. This isn't your average, cramped crawl-space attic. It is a generous, dedicated room designed to handle seasonal gear and long-term storage with ease. It’s a perfect testament to how smart design can transform typically underutilized square footage into a massive asset for your home.
